Russian traditional wooden architecture Series

I am excited to share the details about the recent personalized order I got: I created the Series of the artworks that are dedicated to the Russian traditional wooden architecture.

First I got the request to create images with the platbands - this is the external traditional decorative & protective element that was used for centuries in the wooden architecture. I started to collect more information about wooden architecture & came up with the idea that I can include in the Series not only platbands but also I can reflect the idea about how traditional houses were built in the different regions of Russia.

For the Series, I've selected the beautiful wooden structures dated by 16 - 20 centuries. On the artworks, I draw the viewer's attention to the beautiful "lace style" decorative elements that had an important meaning. For the centuries when building a wooden house the special symbols were used on the facades.

For example, rays, circles, and crosses - indicate sunrise, sunset, or just the sun itself. The image can be either in the form of a simplified rhombus with two rays or as a circle with a complex ornament. The main symbolic message is the attraction of life-giving solar power.

Wavy lines are signs of water, rain. Water is a symbol of heavenly fertility, harvest.

There are many more different symbols that could also vary from region to region.

Overall, I really admire the idea of combining symbolism, tradition and architectural solutions & hopefully these practices and cultural heritage will be preserved.
