Choosing the proper frames can be a new experience for you, so let me share with you some ideas on how you can frame your new art piece that it can create elegant style and great mood for your space.

First of all, decide where do you want to place the artwork, as this defines the frame color and type. I wrote a brief guide, you can have a look in my blog, but also feel free to find some inspiration online using Pinterest or googling it.

After you know where to place your art, the next step is to decide if you are framing your artwork with the local framing design company or by yourself.

If you have already appropriate frame ready, I would recommend anyway to put the frame in the mat as mats create visual space for the artwork to breathe (mat is a thin, flat piece of paper-based material included within a picture frame, which serves as additional decoration and separates the art from the glass).

Here using the framing design company's services will be a great idea, as they have various mats' colors and types and the mat will be properly cut, just let them know the frame size.

Here is the list of my favorite frames types:

  • Gallery Frames - hardwood frames that use the mat to create a frame in frame effect. I love this style so much as they create a "gallery style" aesthetic and a touch of mid-century modern design. Try putting together a collection of three or more frames for a stylish look.

  • Modern metal frame - perfect for the minimalist look and emphasizes the print. It will be a great choice for the minimalist décor themes or urban style place.

  • Floating frames - provide extra space around your canvas, they use clear glass or acrylic in place of a mat to give your print the effect of floating on the wall. They provide a unique effect - "standing on its own".

  • Deep-Set Frames - they add depth to the wall, they are special as they create a subtle shadow within, adding dimension.

  • Tabletop frames - will look great on the areas that need a little extra stylish touch, these frames are right for the tables, shelves, fireplaces, etc.

When choosing a color for your frames:

  • I will suggest following the main design rule - the “rule of three” that suggests using the color at least three times in a room. (60% being the main room color, 30% is the secondary color that is in a harmony with the main, and 10% is the accent color -the one that brings energy to space).

  • If you are planning an art wall with various drawings/photos to display, try to follow the rule of 3 colors by selecting between one or max three colors for the frames.

  • For the inspiration you can search for the color palettes for the stunning color combination, for example, Canva is a nice one I like: https://www.canva.com/colors/

  • As for the mat color, for my artworks, white, beige, and light grey always will be a stylish selection, but depending on your interior you can adapt the design. You can see below how my artworks look like when framed in the art mat:

In conclusion, I wanted to add that if you are giving someone the artwork as a present and you are not sure with the frame color and design, here the gallery frame with the black/dark wood and white combination will be a perfect choice - your present will look classic, stylish and will fit many various designs.
